UAQ Beach Clean Up Campaign Day

The coastal seashore area clean-up campaign was performed to actively engage the people working at 150 MIGD DESALINATION PLANT operational plant to come together and live the NAQA’A Company Environment Social Governance (ESG) goals and to align with those of the United Arab Emirates and United nations. The clean up of the coastal seashore area located to the west of operational plant gave the environment policy life and meaning through the action and understanding of the people!

Plant Celebrated Ten Million Safe Manhours in 2022

As part of NAQA’A DESALINATION PLANT’s (NDP) objective to put safety first, the project has achieved an outstanding safety milestone. Led by Chief Executive Officer, Mr. David Binley; Project Director, Mr. Victor Caballero; HSE Manager, Mr. Paul Burns; the project has surpassed 10 Million Safe Man-hours without Loss Time Injury (LTI).

NDP held an awarding ceremony for the achievement, and appreciation certificates were issued by Mr. Mohammad Abunayyan (Chairman of ACWA Power), and Mr. Mohammad Saleh (Director General of Etihad Water and Electricity). The achievement demonstrates NDP’s commitment to bringing the highest safety standards, exceptional leadership, safe work practices, excellent implementation of the HSE management system and procedures.

The Plant records Five million LTI-free man hours in 2021.

The Plant HSE department has monitored day-to-day activities at its premises across multiple locations to make sure that its safety policy has been carried out effectively. The achievement is a testimony to the company’s robust standards on employee health, safety and environment which are integral to the company’s core values.

Proper and excellent planning, training and oversight of the implementation of safety norms across the operations to mitigate existing and foreseeable risks is another crucial factor leading to this milestone.

H.E. the Minister of Energy & Infrastructure Inaugurates the New Desalination Plant in UAQ

H.E. Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, inaugurated the new desalination plant in Umm Al Quwain, the largest project of its kind in the UAE and the region. This Inauguration comes after the completion of the first phase of the project, where 50 million gallons will be produced per day, while the total production capacity of it will reach 150 million gallons per day after the completion of all phases during the second half of 2022. H.E. the Minister expressed his happiness with the completion of the first phase of the project, as it is one of the most important projects that will achieve the objectives of the National Water Security Strategy 2036. On the sidelines of the inauguration of the plant, His Excellency the Minister stressed that the plant is designed according to the highest international standards and relies on the latest operating technologies such as electric motors with Variable Frequency Drive technology to reduce energy consumption used in production. Saleh stressed that, in conjunction with the establishment of the plant, Etihad Water and Electricity is implementing a number of networking and water storage projects aimed at securing water supplies and ensuring their sustainability in the country in general and the northern regions in particular. It is noteworthy that the new desalination plant in Umm Al Quwain is being built on an area of 250,000 square meters at a cost of about 2.2 billion dirhams.

A consortium has achieved the financial closure for the largest desalination project in Umm Al Quwain.

The group consisting of ACWA Power and MDC Power Holding Company, along with the Etihad Water & Electricity has funds in place for the 150 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD) Umm Al Quwain independent water project.

The $800 million project is mainly funded by a syndicate of seven international and local lenders who will provide $680 million senior debt.

The mandated lead entities include Korea Development Bank, MUFG Bank, Siemens Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, First Abu Dhabi Bank and the Saudi American Bank.

Paddy Padmanathan, president and CEO of ACWA Power, said: “We are pleased to partner with Etihad Water & Electricity and Mubadala on the first IWP infrastructure in Umm Al Quwain. Successfully achieving financial closure at this stage is testament to the readiness of the market for private-public partnerships.

“It also reflects ACWA Power’s strong financial standing and reliability as well as the credence we have gained from global and financial institutions that has been developed over years of successful operations and partnerships.”

The plant will be developed to produce 150MIGD of desalinated water and will be located at a coastal site in Umm Al Quwain along the border of Ras Al Khaimah.

The water purchase agreement with Etihad Water & Electricity is signed for a 35-year term, and the plant is expected to be commercially operational by July 2022.

UAE entities sign deal to build largest desalination plant in the northern emirates

The Etihad Water & Electricity and a consortium consisting of ACWA Power and MDC Power Holding Company, an entity fully owned by Mubadala Investment, has entered into a water purchase agreement for a desalination plant in Umm Al Quwain.

The 150 million gallon per day desalination plant will utilize seawater reverse osmosis technology, a statement said.

It is strategically located between Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah.

Under the terms of the agreement, Etihad Water & Electricity will hold 20 per cent of the stake, while ACWA Power and Mubadala will each own 40 per cent. The government of Umm Al Quwain will join as a partner in the project and will own a stake at a later date.

Once commissioned, the Umm Al Quwain plant will be the largest desalination project in the northern emirates, the statement said.

Construction is expected to begin in the second half of 2019, with initial water production scheduled in 2021.

The project is part of the UAE’s effort to optimise water production and meet the increasing demand for water in the country.

Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, UAE minister of Energy and Industry and chairman of Etihad Water & Electricity, said: “This project is Etihad Water & Electricity’s first asset in partnership with the private sector. Its implementation will reinforce UAE’s Water Security Strategy 2036 as well as bolster its core programmes.

“The plant is set to supply 150 million imperial gallons per day to the northern emirates and will prompt the private sector to further invest in those areas.”

Mohammad Mohammad Saleh, director general of Etihad Water & Electricity added that the plant will help meet the demands of both residential and agriculture sectors with competitive economical prices.
